The drama begins with the arrival of Rico Naranja, a foreigner looking to make a fresh start at North City. He meets up with his cousin Fausto who lets him stay at his place while he finds a job and gets on his feet. A few months later Rico learns that Fausto coaches a local recreational basketball team and decides to join. It is here that he meets star player and local pimp Jordan Watts, otherwise known as MacDaddy when pimping. Rico befriends Jordan who gives him odd jobs for quick cash. Some of these jobs involve run-ins with the law; Rico develops a close acquaintance with detective Oscar Reed who brings him in on more than one occasion. One of these jobs requires that Rico visit a strip club to drop off a package and it is there that he meets Molly James, a stripper that goes by Wildcat when on the job. Rico instantly falls for Molly and the two hit it off and decide to live together, Rico moves out of his cousin’s house and into Molly’s apartment.
One year later we find Rico and Fausto walking home drunk from the bar, Rico carries his half-conscious cousin to his home and leaves him on the front porch. While walking home Rico meets a very seductive French prostitute, who is also very drunk, named Henriette Orchard, or Henny as she calls herself. Unbeknownst to Rico, Henny is one of Jordan’s prostitutes and is in fact his personal lover. Rico, under the influence, has sex with Henny and gets her pregnant. However, when Henny finds out she is pregnant she believes it was Jordan who knocked her up. Jordan, on learning that he might become a father, decides to quit the pimping business and give his girls, excluding Henny, to another local pimp, something he was considering anyway.
Months pass and by this time Rico has found success in crime along with his cousin. They traffic drugs across the city, which brings even more encounters with the law and Detective Reed, and still perform odd jobs for gangs. After being pregnant for some time Henny gives birth to Oliver Watts. However, Oliver is not the same ethnicity as Jordan, in fact he bears a resemblance to Rico. Upon seeing this Jordan goes into a fit of rage and pins Rico to the wall demanding to know the truth. Rico admits that they did have sex but that it was before he knew that she and Jordan were together and that he was drunk at the time. After hearing this Jordan is still furious and vows to kill Rico for betraying him. When Molly finds out that Rico had cheated she leaves him, partly for this reason and that fact that she did not agree with Rico’s buissness in crime. Although he is heartbroken Rico still traffics drugs across the city to make money and keeps himself deep in crime. One night while Rico and Fausto are walking home from a very profitable job they are jumped by a man wearing a mask and holding a gun. The three fight and in the fray the masked man manages to shoot Fausto dead. Rico disarms the man, pins him down, and pulls off his mask to discover that it’s Jordan. The police arrive on the scene and arrest Jordan; he is placed on death row. Stricken with grief Henny kills herself in her apartment leaving Oliver crying in his crib. Rico, torn by the loss of his brother, girlfriend, and former friend leaves the crime business and adopts Oliver. He leaves North City to find a new world to raise his ill-born son.
